As the indoor track season for the Warren Central High School boys track team has come to an end, the team is still going strong during their move to the outdoor season.
Coach Sean O’Brien is the coach for boys track at Warren Central. In addition to being held in different locations, he says that one reason why the indoor season is different from outdoor is because some of the races are different.
“Indoors has a bigger emphasis on relays and has slightly different events,” O’Brien said. “For example, 60-meter dash are indoors, and 100-meter dash are outdoors.”
The indoor season is designed to prepare and train the team for the outdoor season so that the boys are at their best when they move outside. With the new members this year, they are working hard to stay fit for the season.
“With all of our new athletes, we try to make sure that they are given workouts that they can handle so that they can stay healthy and progress throughout the season,” O’Brien said.
One of the returning runners, senior Triston Evans, says that one thing that he likes about indoor season that he doesn’t like about outdoor season is the weather. With indoor season, the athletes get the same environment every time they race, unlike outdoors.
“With indoor season, the weather doesn’t manipulate the way you run,” Evans said. “Outdoor season, weather can play a big part in your running.”
Now, they are back outside and are getting back into their regular environment. They had their first outdoor practice on April 7. Evans says that he feels glad to be back outside, but he can’t wait for May because it will be warmer. He is also seeing his own growth from last year
“Usually you run faster outdoors than indoors,” Evans said. “And with the workouts we’ve been doing, I feel like I am faster than last outdoor season.”
During practice Evans says that he feels like he did great, more conditioned than was last year. Evan believes that one thing he should work on is being a good role model.
“I need to be a better leader because our team has so much potential, but we’re not getting the most out of it,” Evans said “So I have to motivate them and show them that they are good at the sport.”
One of the newer runners is senior Armonte Jackson, who started running this year. Jackson is glad to be outside and can’t wait to see himself compete. He is ready to have fun while running.
“I feel like I did great last practice, we did 150, 250, 320 runs,” Jackson said. “And I felt like I pushed myself really good.”
With being back outside, Jackson feels like he can run faster, run for a longer time and gain more endurance.
“Depending on where the wind goes I feel like it will push me forward and that I’ll be able to run a faster time,” he said.
The boys are pushing themselves to be the best and fastest runners they can be. They are excited for the season to progress and for any upcoming track meets. Warren is ready to see them run their best and grow within the season.
